Welney Wishes

Lisa Woods, prize winning writer.

Thank you for visiting my page.  Lisa Woods is my pen-name, chosen after my success in the Wells International Short Story Competition.  On this page I have listed my successful competition entries.  These stories have now been gathered into a book with the title 'Tales from Plover Cottage'.  The book is available from Amazon or by contacting me directly.

Please join me for the book launch of my collected stories.  5 pm on Saturday 7th October 2017.

2017 - My most recent story to achieve success is '1947 - Flood'. This story was short-listed for the Strands International Short Story Competition.  The story will be included in an anthology along with the prize winners and other short-listed entries.  I am extremely proud of the success of this story as it was a truly global competition. '1947 - Flood' will be available in the Strands anthology and as part of another collection of short stories to be released in 2017.

2016 - Ely Writers' Day invited entries to mark the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare.  My story 'This Guest of Summer' received a 'Highly Commended' award.

2015 had a good start with a first prize placing for my story 'In Our Time'.  Here are the comments from the judge of the inaugural Ely Writer's Day short story competition: 'Filled with emotion - somehow manages to be heart-warming and heart-wrenching at the same time. I love the description of the scene in the garden - I felt I was standing in the kitchen and the protagonists simple acceptance of his presence makes it believable to us too - and we feel with her, as she struggles to find a way to make him stay, whilst at the same time sadly accepting that he cannot.'

2013 - The short story 'Doctor's Visit' was shortlisted for the 'Scribble' Annual Short Story Competition and was published by the magazine. 'Scribble' is a subscription magazine that showcases new writers.

2010 - My entry 'Black Dog' won first prize in the 2010 Wells Literary Festival International Short Story Competition.

The  Editor of the 'Welney News' kindly publishes an item from me in every edition.  My article 'D-Day' remembers commemoration events over the years and memories of the Normandy beaches. The item was included in the June 2014 copy of the newsletter.  I have re-produced it here for you to read.
